The Breakroom - What Does Yours Say About Your Company Culture

Breakrooms may be the place that workers spend the least amount of time, but these spaces are where employees go to unwind. Employers should make every effort to make these places conducive for relieving stress. The importance of the breakroom is highly ignored by most organizations, but it can actually help to increase productivity. Your break area should be a place where the staff goes to enjoy their lunch or coffee and leave feeling energized and refreshed. The following features can be used in order to improve the breakroom environment in your company:

Lounges and Coffee

A variety of seating should be available to employees in the break room. Lounge chairs and colorful walls make this space more interesting and comfortable. If at all possible, the break room should include windows that allow natural light through. After all, this part of the office should be an escape from the cubicle farm, should seek to promote social interaction among employees and bosses, and increase job satisfaction, collaborating, and teamwork

Thinking Space

Some employees might use this as a "thinking space," away from the usual office hustle and bustle; this is their ideal workspace. This area will provide them with a place to get some insight or ideas outside of their four cubicle walls. When things get overwhelming at work, thinking space in the breakroom will provide workers with the chance to shut off their brain for a moment and unwind.

Games

Physical activity plays an important role in reducing stress. Try incorporating games like ping pong or foosball to promote healthy competition. Your employees can bond by participating in multiplayer games which will later facilitate work productivity.

Celebrations

Who doesn't like to have an afternoon office party to look forward to? It really helps to break up the monotony of the day.

The breakroom is where employees and supervisors should celebrate work achievements, along with birthdays and work anniversaries. This increases offices morale and keeps everyone motivated and positive. Your break area should be cheerful and spacious enough to accommodate gathering for these small occasions.

Movement

Sitting in one place for hours will cause aches and pains, eventually reducing the ability to think clearly as a result,. According to a study by the University of Illinois, people stop paying attention to the environment if it remains constant for a longer period of time. Therefore, the breakroom should have enough space to allow mobility for the employees so that their thoughts can flow freely.

Breakrooms should stand out as compared to other rooms of the workplace. By adding a touch of creativity, you are not only improving the culture of your company by reducing absenteeism and increasing social integration, but also by attracting prospective employees for the future success of your organization.
