Office Chairs: Mesh Vs. Upholstered

The right office chairs are the first step to ensuring that your employees are comfortable during work, and therefore, productive all day long. It's vitally important to your business; being comfortable makes for increased productivity during the average 8 hours spent at the office each day. It's a challenge to sit for such an extended period of time, but the right office chair will make it easier.

There is a wide array of choices when it comes to choosing your office chairs. However, mesh backed and upholstered office chairs are the most common types of chairs used in the workplace. Which type will work best in your office? Which office chairs will keep your employees comfortable, focused, and motivated, day in and day out? Read on and find out!

Office Chair Support

Support is the main thing when selecting an office chair. Mesh office chairs are best when it comes to proper support. They’re adjustable, and the curve at the back helps maintain good posture without hurting your neck or back. Employees can adjust these chairs according to their personal comfort whenever they want.
Upholstered office chairs are sometimes adjustable, but do not offer the same kind of support as a mesh-backed chair. An employee sitting in a chair that doesn't offer enough support may begin to notice back or neck pain after sitting day after day at work.

Office Chairs For the Tall and Short

It is impossible to sit in the same position all day, so the best office chairs will be fully adjustable. Fully adjustable office chairs will feature moveable arm rests and allow employees to adjust the height as well. Some of your employees will have long legs, and will, therefore, need a higher chair, while others are shorter and don't need as much leg room. Employees need to be able to sit in an office chair with their feet flat on the floor no matter their individual height.
Both upholstered and mesh-backed office chairs should be adjustable to accommodate any height.

Durable and Stylish

Mesh chairs make for better task chairs and are well-liked by a majority of office workers. These office chairs are sleek and aesthetically pleasing for both employees and clients that visit the workplace. Mesh-backed seats are slim and not quite as bulky as traditional upholstered office chairs.
As far as durability is concerned, there are two mesh-backed office chair options:
Mesh seats with a  thin fabric back
The fabric on these office chairs may seem thin, but, these mesh seats are quite durable. The back fabric is tightly woven, making it strong, yet flexible. These kinds of office chairs can typically take years of use before needing to be replaced. The woven backs are usually held together by frames, which further increases the durability of these chairs.

Mesh seats with an upholstered fabric back
Mesh office chairs with upholstered backs are less durable compared to the ones with woven backs. This is because the upholstery tends to tear and flatten within a year. Not only will worn-out flattened chair upholstery make the workplace look disheveled, it will also be uncomfortable to sit on all day.

Ventilation

Ventilation is an overlooked component of office chairs. Sitting on a piece of furniture for 8 to 10 hours could get uncomfortable as the fabric of the chair could trap body heat. Again, mesh and upholstery will ventilate differently:
Mesh seats with a thin fabric back
Mesh chairs with a thin fabric back are usually preferable for its excellent ventilation qualities. The woven fabric allows air to flow freely and keeps the person comfortable and cool.
Mesh seats with an upholstered  back
Mesh seating with upholstered backs block the airflow path. This can cause sweating and even damp clothing, making it extremely uncomfortable to continue working.
Mesh-backed chairs will work well for employees that sit for long periods of time at their desks. On the other hand, upholstered chairs will eventually get worn out and uncomfortable. However, when choosing between the two, take your employees’ preferences and your office’s overall décor into account.
